E-commerce set to grow in 2009

A new report from emarketer.com points to continued growth in online e-commerce throughout 2009, despite the tough economic climate. The report, updated on 24th December, continues:

UK e-commerce revenues will remain strong in 2009, as Internet stores continue to weather the recessionary storm better than their brick-and-mortar counterparts. In September 2008, eMarketer forecast that UK business-to-consumer (B2C) online sales in 2009 would be worth £68.4 billion ($127.9 billion), and we have seen no reason to alter that forecast.

The report continues on to suggest that companies that offer great shopping experiences including pricing and returns will continue to strive whilst ’second rate’ operations will fail.

The trend for discounts and vouchers will also grow through 2009. This is the first research that we have seen to offer a viewpoint on the market changes next year. To date research has been out of date or short in coming forward with opinion.

From our agency experience, we are not seeing any real dip in online demand for purchasing and we expect online to continue to perform in 2009.
