How Social Opinion will Help Shape Search in 2009

Friday, September 26th, 2008

I presented some initial thoughts yesterday at Ad Tech. The talk was covering my thoughts on how social opinion can help define search campaigns. In the presentation, we looked at various ways in which I would look for information on the new Nokia N96, looking at what Google, Yahoo and Twitter would tell me and how the information I was picking up from Tiwtter and other channels like Tumblr were not reflected in the mainstream search campaign.

I had chosen the Nokia N96 as I am a geek and I am interested in the new ‘phone. The presentation makes it clear that none of my findings were meant to criticise the brand, associated agencies or strategies but can be used as examples for other brands looking to add that extra something to their search campaigns.

Of course, adding social opinion to your campaign can be seen as less important than succesful bidding, portfolio management strategies, tracking and all the other elements that make our campaigns so successful. However, as web 3.0 kicks in, and starts to really understand consumer feeling and opinion, advertisers should not ignore how someone feels.

The market changes on a weekly basis, so this presentation I am sure will date rapidly. The good news is that I will be watching the market and feeding in views to the blog as we analyse them.

Feel free to leave comments on the presentation here on the blog.
