Internet Explorer has announced a serious security alert advising all users to switch to another browser until further notice.

With over 70% of users using IE what implications does this have for online shoppers this festive period? The countdown to guaranteed Christmas delivery for online orders will mean that most retailers can expect an influx of last minute sales this week that may exceed ‘Mega Monday’s’ reported online spend of over £320,000,000. The security alert leaves users at risk from attackers gaining access to their computers and personal information – an issue for users both researching and shopping online.

The attacks to date are against Windows Internet Explorer Seven, whilst other versions still at risk. So at a time where the internet has propelled itself to being invaluable what should users be doing to ensure their purchases are secure and what can retailers learn from this event?

Consumers can quickly and simply download alternative browsers such as Firefox or Chrome, which are just as easy to use as Internet Explorer and whilst nothing is risk free this will overcome the short-term issue IE is suffering from.

All site owners should ensure that their site is compatible with the latest browsers as if your site only works in IE you could be missing out on 30% of your  active audience.

So before committing to that purchase is it time to commit to a new browser?
